There lived a farmer in a village. He had a hen. The hen used to lay a golden egg every day. The farmer sold the golden egg in the market and got a huge amount of money. Soon, he became rich.
But the farmer was very greedy. He thought, "At present, I get only one egg every day. This is not enough. Why should I not get all the eggs at once? I must kill the hen." So, the greedy farmer killed the hen. But he did not find any golden egg. He was very sad now.
2. The Tortoise and the Hare
A tortoise and a hare lived in a forest. Once, the hare saw the tortoise walking slowly with a heavy shell on his back. The hare laughed at the tortoise’s slow speed. The tortoise felt sad, but he challenged the hare for a race. The hare agreed.
The race began. The hare ran very fast, but the tortoise moved slowly. The proud hare thought he had enough time, so he rested under a tree and soon fell asleep. The tortoise walked slowly and steadily and finally reached the winning point first. The hare woke up only to see that he had lost the bet.
3. Akbar and Birbal
Akbar was a great Mughal emperor. Birbal was his minister, known for his wit and wisdom. Akbar always praised him, which made some courtiers jealous. One day, they wanted to test Birbal’s intelligence.
A courtier asked, “How many crows are there in Agra?” Birbal asked for a week’s time. Every day, he sat on the terrace looking at the crows. After a week, the courtier repeated his question. Birbal confidently answered, “There are 1,56,757 crows in Agra. If you don’t believe me, you can count them yourself.”
Akbar laughed heartily, admiring Birbal’s cleverness.
4. The Woodcutter and the Axe
Long ago, there lived a poor woodcutter in a small village. One day, while cutting wood near a pond, his axe slipped and fell into the water. He tried hard to take it out, but he could not. The woodcutter sat and wept bitterly.
An angel appeared before him and asked the reason. She went into the pond and brought out a golden axe. The woodcutter said it was not his. She then brought a silver axe, but again, he refused. Finally, she brought his old iron axe. The woodcutter happily accepted it.
The angel was pleased with his honesty and gifted him all the three axes.
